Pablo Neruda was a Chilean poet, writer, diplomat and politician. Born in 1904 he showed an aptitude for poetry and writing early, as he at the age of 13 wrote his first work “La Mañana“, which was published in the local newspaper in the village Parral.

Pablo Neruda was a pseudonym penned by Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, the name given to him by his mother. He changed his name at the age of 16, inspired by the Chilean poet Pablo de Rocka and the Czech poet and writer Jan Neruda.

Though Neruda was born in Parral, he grew up in Temuco, a city in southern Chile. Neruda’s mother died shortly after his birth, and a few years later he moved to Temuco with his father.
